Embark on a dreamy, nighttime jaunt with a young boy and the moon. Overcoming a fear of the dark and discovering the world at night lives at the heart of this poetic tale. Includes notes about the moon and plants and animals that thrive in the wee hours.

I Took the Moon for a Walk is a very lyrical and uplifting story about a boy, who heads out to explore his town under the light of the moon before tucking himself into bed (with the moon “sharing his sweet sleepy light,” of course!).  The story combines both the reality of the world on a moonlight night with the fantasy of a little boy at play.  An equally good read for both 18 and 34 month old readers!

What I especially like about so many of the books published by Barefoot Books is the additional learning information at the end of the story.  In the case of “I Took The Moon for a Walk,” children have the opportunity to learn about the different phases of the moon, what the moon looks like in different parts of the world (man, rabbit, kitten, etc), and also learn about the different kinds of creatures (cats, rabbits, bats, fireflies, owls, flowers) who prefer the moon (are nocturnal) to the sun.

As for me and my boys, we have not stopped talking about the moon, or watching it come up in the sky ever since! I gave this book 4 of 5 stars. For ages 1 to 7.
